Flash butt welding is a type of welding technique where small components and small parts are welded by high voltage resistance by using some of the regions of the components itself to combine them. This is done by positioning the parts from end-to-end and combining them with the help of high current density, flash butt welding can be done in various different components of different shapes and sizes to combine them, such as parts of bicycles i.e. rims of wheels, parts in railway tracks, etc.

Flash butt welding is done by making a small contact between the components and flashing high voltage current in order to melt the specific regions of the components. This allows the components to melt and get combined with each other which becomes permanently combined after they get solidified.

Flash butt welding is usually done manually using mostly, semi-automatic or automatic welding machines. The largest application of flash butt welding rail is in the railway industry for the purpose of creating continuous welded rail(CWR) which allows the railway lines to be much smoother and prevents any kinds of gaps between the sections. This allows the high-speed rails to run on the lines and also reduces the frequency for the maintenance of the rail lines.
